How to Update MindTheGapps to a Newer Version Safely
Once MindTheGapps is installed and working, you don't need to reflash it constantly. But there are specific moments when updating matters — especially around ROM upgrades. Here's what to do and when.
When do you actually need to update?
- Dirty-flashing the same Android version: usually you should reflash the same GApps right after the ROM update to restore any system files it replaced.
- Upgrading to a new Android version (e.g. Android 15 → 16): you must flash the matching new MindTheGapps package.
- Everyday app updates: the Play Store updates Google apps automatically — you do not reflash GApps for that.
Updating during a ROM dirty flash (no data wipe)
- Download the correct MindTheGapps for the ROM's Android version.
- Boot into recovery.
- Flash the new ROM ZIP first.
- Flash MindTheGapps immediately after, in the same session.
- Wipe cache/dalvik and reboot.
Your apps and data remain intact because you didn't wipe the data partition.
Upgrading to a new Android version
Moving to a higher Android release is bigger. Many ROMs recommend a clean flash for major version jumps:
- Back up your data.
- Wipe system, data, cache.
- Flash the new ROM, then the new-version MindTheGapps before first boot.
- Reboot and sign in again.
Do not mix versions
Never flash Android 14 GApps onto an Android 15 ROM (or vice versa). A version mismatch is the fastest route to a boot loop or endless Play Services crashes.
Keeping Google apps current
Individual Google apps (Play Store, Gmail, Maps) update themselves through the Play Store. MindTheGapps only provides the base framework — so once it's on the right version, day-to-day updates are automatic.
Grab the latest package for your Android version from the download table whenever you upgrade your ROM.
